Campanile*
University of Central Missouri
Warrensburg, MO
This designed landmark without a specific program posed a unique challenge in creating a signature design piece specifically for University of Central Missouri. On a grass covered knoll between the precast concrete football stadium and the native Warrensburg limestone University Union, this design blends these two contrasting elements in a simplistic design that is capped with a conical shaped, turned copper roof, which was taken from Dockery Hall, one of the early college buildings unique to the UCMO campus.
By utilizing precast concrete technology, this design was developed utilizing three forms to cast all the components of the structure and facades. Another methodology employed in economy of design was utilization of a pre-engineered “Garden Temple” rotunda to transition the rectilinear base to the conical roof.
Although its identity as a University landmark is displayed through the day its most significant impact is at night where specialty lighting was extensively integrated into its design in order to heighten the dynamic impact of its presence.
